yay LogJam // question [Jun. 16th, 2003|12:14 am]

[Current Music |Eddie From Ohio - From Dacca]

I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all the features that LogJam has that make posting and editing easier! I especially like HTML preview, offline journal sync, draft saving, XML validation, and shortcuts for lj-cut, lj user, and regular links. I used to use ljupdate, but I'm not a huge Emacs person, so the GTK2 version of LogJam converted me. :- )

Much thanks to evan and everyone else who works on it.

Does anyone know if the problems with checkfriends lately (when I open LogJam, it eventually becomes "checkfriends disabled") are specific to LogJam or if they're happening with all clients?

gaal is the master of checkfriends, and he's away for a few weeks. Can you reproduce it reliably? (Or, in other words: will I be able to reproduce it once I'm home?)

From the LJ support page at the moment:
The "checkfriends" protocol has been temporarily disabled for free users. There's a popular client that isn't obeying our protocol, and in doing so, it's spiking server load. It's been disabled until we can enforce the protocol limits. This means that your client's icon will no longer flash when your friends make an update, until this is re-enabled.

I was thinking the same thing, but the user in question has a paid account. Unless of course they were signed into Logjam with a free account and that might be what's causing the 'checkfriends' failure.

Thanks for checking -- I was going to mention that. I do know that checkfriends has been disabled for free users for quite a while.

It seems to be either a problem with my connection or a problem with filtered friends groups...currently testing it to see.

I seem to recall there's some code in there that automatically disables checkfriends if it fails too many times in a row. It could be LJ acting up, or there could be a bug in that code where it doesn't reset itself. Do you get any sort of warning when it disables itself?

No, no warning. And it only happens when I've selected to check only a certain filter -- it seems to happen regardless of which groups chosen. If it's just set to the defaults (check all friends), it works fine. My time is set to 300 seconds; I didn't change that except to see if lengthening it helped, and it didn't.

Of late I've only had that happen when my network connection acts up (water gets into the phone lines in my apartment building and screws up my DSL). For a while it was happening regularly, but it was clearly a problem on LiveJournal's end (I couldn't reliably load my friends page, either).

Sorry I only got to this now. This seems to be a problem in the server; I've opened bug #1134 and submitted a patch.
