|checkfriends in 4.5.3

i can't seem to make this feature work at all. i have enabled "monitor friends list for new entries", set it to notify after 1 entry, and check every 45 seconds. but no matter how long i wait, i don't get notified; yet reloading my fpage shows new posts. i've tried enabling the floating indicator and the system tray icon, neither of which make any difference.
what am i missing? :-)
Logjam never did checkfriends right on one of my FreeBSD machines, but did on the other (essentially identically configured, aside from hardware differences). I even purged all its data and started from scratch, but it didn't work. Never did figure it out. :(

I haven't tried it in a while, but it's probably either:
- LJ turns checkfriends off sometimes due to load
- checkfriends is buggy because I'm a bad programmer
Perhaps turn on the "network debug" flag and watch the console? It'll hopefully make a request every 45 seconds, and you can look for a 1 or a 0 in the response to see if the LJ servers are saying the right thing...
okay, i turned on "dump network data" and "don't fork", and did "update information" to make sure it was working (it was). then i waited a few minutes, but it didn't do anything - nothing on the console at all.
(the first time i typed this reply, i said "don't work" instead of "don't fork". perhaps i still have the hidden "don't work" option enabled ;-)
Actually, now that I think back to why I stopped using it on that machine, it was weirder than that. It always thought there was new activity: when I enabled checkfriends the icon immediately began to spin, and never stopped.
Possibly an uninitialized variable somewhere? I seem to recall poking at the code once but not seeing anything obvious, and valgrind was at the time not working on FreeBSD.
