LogJam

logjam

[myoldself]
I know it's lame to be doing this, seeing as how I know nothing at all about programming, but is there any way to stash the friends list checker in the Gnome (KDE?) panel notification area along the lines of the various Windows clients? Right now I can only get it to sit on the desktop looking naked (or cluttered, if I turn on window dressings), and that's just not as much fun.

nope, but I've considered creating one for the GNOME2 development docklet (which hasn't actually be released yet), perhaps when it's actually released. There's also a gkrellm checkfriends client available, if you're into that sort of thing (I like it over logjam, since I run gkrellm anyway and it's rather unobtrusive)

I think I remember trying out GK-lj in the past and being told that GKrellm wasn't actually installed despite it being running at that very time. Is there a version for GKrellm2?

I modified it to work with gkrellm2, there's a link at gklj_announce

Gaal sent me a patch to do a status docklet. It worked with KDE but didn't work with the GNOME2 docklet applet.
Then I looked at the GAIM docklet code and decided pulling my own teeth out with pliers looked more pleasant.

Bleh. How about docker, or the windowmaker thingy? Which of all the docks/dock-ees here are broken wrt Havoc's proposed spec?

Just wondering how imperative it is that I start my plans to work on a hopelessly bloated branch of aewm et al... I'd (also) *like* to have a working gaim tray icon w/ bubble notifications and such...

IIRC this is what gaim uses:

http://cvs.gnome.org/bonsai/rview.cgi?cvsroot=/cvs/gnome&dir=libegg/libegg/tray

(See the libegg README if you're not familiar with it.)

There's also wmlj, a WindowMaker dockapp (also works standalone); and I made a one-line hack to logjam to enable wmswallow to capture the checkfriends window reliably, but (a) it looks kinda lame because the indicator still thinks it's the original size and (b) since wmswallow goes by window title and so does session management, if you don't close logjam down before saving the session you get two of them on session restart.

I've considered modifying logjam to use libdockapp to create its checkfriends window so it will work either standalone or as a dockapp, but at the rate I'm going it'll be 2006 by the time I get around to it. :/ And I don't think that helps GNOME or KDE users unless there's already a dockapp adapter for their respective panels.

I was going to say that I believe this is called a "docklet", but apparently that's an obsolete term now:

http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/systemtray/systemtray-spec.html

I am probably going to be working on implementing the "tray" part of this soon on a project of my own so it would be rather incestuous for me to volunteer to do LogJam's half (: However, it would certainly be a nice feature.

putting checkfriends wherever you like it

I'd note, in addition to everything said here, that logjam is also a command line checkfriends client. man logjam. If there's a helper tool that puts arbitrary stuff in the system tray / dock / panel / whatever (I think there is one in windows), hacking up a script per platform that uses logjam as a backend might not be too hard.

As for the KDE patch, it's about ten lines and I can send it to you if you like, but keep in mind that it might not last :)

Re: putting checkfriends wherever you like it

oops did I say ten lines? The docking itself was ten lines but the patch was bigger. http://gaal.forum2.org/lj/cfdock.0.patch .
